Summer SAVY, Session 6 Day 5, “The Story of You! An Invitation to Write and Explore Autobiography” (3rd-4th)

Happy Friday and last day of SAVY for this summer! I am so sad to see this week come to an end, but I am so very proud of every one of these students and the work they produced this week. They really dove deep into their memories and worked together to create some amazing memoirs.

We started our day answering our question of the day from our book- describing the type of clothes we like to wear. This was a great way to practice those descriptive details and the use of adjectives that would come in handy later in the day! After that, we read one last sample passage about a little boy in kindergarten who makes up an imaginary friend named Charles who gets up to all sorts of mischief throughout the year. We compared this main character to Jodi from “Ghost Cat”, a story we read earlier this week, and filled out a literature web for the passage.

After ORA, we began our edits on our rough draft memoirs. We used a checklist from our workbooks to do a self-edit before getting with a partner and allowing them to use the same checklist to look over our work. We talked about how sometimes, when it’s our own work, we can miss some mistakes because our brain just fills it in with what should be there rather than what actually is there, so it’s important to get a second set of eyes on your work.

After lunch, it was full steam ahead on our final edits and final drafts of our memoirs! We got brand new pieces of paper and used our best handwriting to copy our final draft down. There was also time to finish up their covers for those who didn’t yesterday. We ended our day with time for everyone to read their stories aloud and share any pictures or mementos that they brought to assist with their storytelling. It was so fun to hear everyone’s stories and how much they improved from the rough draft to the final draft! You will definitely want to take time today to read their memoirs!
