Summer SAVY, Session 6 Day 4, “The Great Debate” (5th-6th)
Today, we put into practice all the skills we have been learning and building throughout the week in anticipation of our first formal, full-class debate tomorrow! We started our day by practicing our reasoning and logic skills through humorous “if” statements, where students had to fill in the logical consequences. Students finished up presenting their SharkTank ideas from yesterday and asked each other in-depth questions about profit margins and tenability. Then, we needed to dive a bit deeper into the art of constructing believable and logical arguments. We watched videos that demonstrated how to build an argument, refute an argument, craft a convincing rebuttal that is both respectful and professional, and effectively summarize our points without repetition.
In the afternoon, we started prep for our rebuttal game to close the day. The kids loved the speed debating game where they got to argue their point, and their partner offered a rebuttal. Tomorrow we will assign roles, conduct research, build our arguments and opening and closing statements, and hold a debate competition! Tomorrow we will wrap up our Island Game and find out what teams will survive, and we will have another final formal debate in order to showcase all of our newly learned skills to the admin team! Until tomorrow!
