Summer SAVY, Session 6 Day 2, “Greek Mythology 2.0” (5th-6th)

Posted by on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 in blog, SAVY.

Happy Tuesday! We had a fabulous second day of Greek Mythology 2.0. After some brief warm-up activities and review games, we finished up our study of some minor gods (a continuation of yesterday afternoon’s lesson), and then we played a version of “guess who” to review all of the gods and titans that we have studied so far! From there, each student got to select a god to represent, and we held a debate about which minor god is the most underrated in the Greek Mythology canon. I was so impressed with the students’ debate skills, and the students were passionate advocates for their specific mythology figures. It was a fun-filled morning!

From there, we transitioned into reading the story of Arachne, the woman who weaves webs until she angers Athena, who turns her into a spider. After studying the original myth, students got into groups and we had our very own web-weaving competition to see who could make the most “spidery” string webs. Each group got a superlative, so make sure to ask your children which one their web won!

After lunch, we transitioned to talking about the 9 muses of Greek Mythology, which many students named as something that they wanted to learn more about when I asked them on the first day. We started with a guessing quiz game, then we studied information about the original muses from mythology. From there, we were able to transition to our overarching project for the week. Students will take a myth that they already know but tell it from a new perspective (such as a forgotten/minor character), making sure to create a representation of the myth for each of the nine muses. So, their project will have several components that they will create throughout the week!

Some dinner table questions:

  • Which god did you represent in the debate?
  • Which superlative did your web win?
  • Which of the muses is your favorite, and why?
  • Which myth have you decided to represent for your final project?

Warmly,

Ms. Waxman
