Summer SAVY, Session 6 Day 1, “Engineering Design: Full STEAM Ahead!” (1st-2nd)

What a wonderful day we had in our Engineering Design class! We started the day with a fun get-to-know-you Bingo game and learned all kinds of exciting things about our classmates.  Then we dove right into the world of engineering and bridges!
This is a marvelously curious class, and we made of list of all the details we already know about bridges and what we want to learn this week.  Ask your child about the different types of bridges we learned about in our story today (arch bridge, beam bridge, and suspension bridge). Our story, Javier Builds a Bridge, walked us through the Engineering Design Process as the main character desperately wants to redesign the broken bridge that leads to his beloved fort.  We read patiently with great anticipation as to whether he would accomplish the task…and he did!  See if your student can retell the story with as much detail as they can recall.
Our discussions included answering questions such as “What is technology and what is the purpose of technology?” and “What does an engineer do?” We spent time evaluating a variety of “random” objects as to whether they are considered technology or not.  This was a great discussion! Did you know that a shoe can be a form of technology?!
There is much anticipation to start building tomorrow and implementing so many of the great concepts we discussed today! Tomorrow will be another great day of design!
