Summer SAVY, Session 5 Day 5, “Space Academy: Exploring the Work of Astronauts” (3rd-4th)

Posted by on Friday, July 18, 2025 in blog, SAVY.

Our final day at Space Academy was filled with reflection, creativity, and connection. We began by revisiting the concept of Exploration and the five Generalizations we’ve been building on all week. Students shared how their understanding of exploration has grown and how it applies not just to space, but to science, learning, and life. Then we jumped back into our Mars Rover projects, adding final touches and preparing to share our creations.
One of the most exciting parts of the day was a surprise opportunity to visit a high school Astrophysics class! Students were thrilled to learn they’d get to meet older students who are studying topics like dark matter. Before the visit, we brainstormed highlights from our week, and several students volunteered to share with the group. Then, in pairs, students came up with thoughtful interview questions to ask the high schoolers. The visit was a huge success—our students were engaged, curious, and respectful, and the conversations were full of insight and inspiration!
After returning to our classroom, students completed their Mars Rovers and participated in a gallery walk to admire each other’s work. One student suggested writing compliments for each rover, and the class eagerly joined in, leaving kind and thoughtful notes for their peers. Then, students paired up to research one of the gas giant planets using NASA’s website and reference books. They shared fascinating facts about Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, and impressed everyone with their teamwork and research skills.
To wrap up our week, students collected final data from our sunlight and water cycle experiments, noting changes and drawing conclusions. We then spent time in final reflections, sharing favorite moments, biggest surprises, and what we’re still curious about. Students also explored their new space books, reading and sharing discoveries. It was a joyful, thoughtful end to a week full of learning, creativity, and exploration.
As our Space Academy journey comes to a close, I couldn’t be prouder of this group of curious, kind, and intelligent students. They’ve asked big questions, tackled challenges, and supported one another every step of the way. Whether designing rovers, exploring planets, or interviewing astrophysicists, they’ve shown what it means to be true Cosmic Cadets. I hope they leave this week inspired to keep exploring—on Earth and beyond!
Questions to Ask Your Cosmic Cadet Tonight:
  • What did you learn from the high school astrophysics students?
  • What was your favorite part of building your Mars Rover?
  • Which gas giant did you research, and what’s one cool fact you learned?
  • What did you notice in the final results of your water cycle experiment?
  • What does exploration mean to you now, after this week?
