Summer SAVY, Session 5 Day 5, “Programming and Robotics” (5th-6th)
Our last day in Programming and Robotics was a blast! We started our day thinking about how robots impact human jobs. We discussed and thought about the ethics of using robots. We then developed 3 laws for robots in small groups and discussed why these would be important.
After our recreation time, students brainstormed and planned their final build. Requirements for their final build were to choose either healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, or entertainment, and plan/develop a robot that carries out a task within that area, program their robots to carry out the task, and test and refine their robot. Students were also required to work collectively with their partner and be engaged in the building and programming. Students spent time on their final robot build and collaborated until they were ready to present to the class. We had some very interesting ideas and fantastic teamwork!
Coding Stations finished up our day, and students enjoyed the games and free builds. We also took some time to reward how respectful, responsible, safe, and hardworking the students were this week. This class has been such a joy to work with. I am tremendously grateful that we had the opportunity to work with your students. They have been so collaborative and coachable. They are the kind of class a teacher wishes they could have for many more weeks. I have been extremely impressed with their ideas, flexibility in thinking, and the connections they have made. What an amazing group of kiddos!
Some questions to ask your student tonight include:
- What laws should be in place for robots to ensure they are a benefit to humans?
- What robot did you build today? What purpose did they carry out?
- What types of robots should be built that would help you in daily life? How would you program them?
