Career Connections at SAVY, Week 2, Evidence on Trial (7th-8th)

Posted by on Monday, November 4, 2024 in blog, SAVY.

Dear mock trialists and families,

On Saturday, we practiced thinking on our feet by starting, stopping, and conducting arguments in several environments (in the hall, outside on the lawn, and in the classroom). We also worked on crafting points and counterpoints when given topics with little to no prep time. Even though the topics may have seemed a little silly (i.e., Is it better to be too hot or too cold?), this exercise helps us prepare our persuasive powers for the time when we are put to the test on the stand and have to either answer difficult questions as an expert or character witness or ask them whilst building a narrative and picture as one of the prosecuting or defending attorneys.

Next, we began to prepare for our mock trial, the honorable Judge Teacher Rho presiding with our wonderful bailiff, CA Jydin. We prepared our opening and closing or our witness statements, strategized in our defense or plaintiff teams, figured out what evidence to introduce and when, and thought carefully about the voir dire process of jury selection, which we will be acting out next week. When we begin next Saturday, our “SAVY” negotiators will be conducting three different trials – the case of Petunia Pig v. B.B. Wolf, the case of The Ministry of Magic v. Ginnny Weasley, and the Gen Alpha Court Civil suit (topic yet to be determined – ask your SAVY student about this one!). We will even have a group of unpredictable jurors joining our class next week! What will the verdicts be? That will all depend on our “SAVY” powers of persuasion!!
