Summer SAVY, Session 6 Day 5, How to Change the World: Social Movements & Collective Action (7th-8th)
Dear Parents,
We had a fantastic day of student presentations to conclude our week together!
Independent Research Projects and Presentations
Students have spent time all week working on independent research projects on various social movements, examining the movements’ goals, impacts, strategies, and tactics. Today, we had the joy of learning from each of them! The students presented on a variety of movements, including Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, gender equality in the workplace, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigration reform. All presentations illustrated the students’ deep and inspiring commitment to creating a better world.
Enacting Change in Our Own Communities
To conclude, students returned to the utopias they envisioned on our first day together. They updated their vision to include any changes in their thinking that they made throughout the week. They concluded by making commitments to themselves and each other to enact the change they want to see in practical, concrete ways.
Discussion Questions:
To further engage your child in today’s topics, consider asking:
- Did any of your classmates’ presentations influence or change your view on a social movement?
- What aspects of the utopias presented by your peers resonated with you?
- What practical commitments did you make to changing our community?
We had such a lovely time spending the week with your kind and bright young scholars! Thank you again for supporting your child’s academic growth!
