Summer SAVY, Session 5 Day 4, Earth Science Rocks (1st-2nd)

Posted by on Thursday, July 18, 2024 in blog, SAVY.

We started today’s exploration with experiments that displayed erosion from acid (vinegar) and friction. Many eager hands worked away on our rocks and keen observations and analyses were made.

We moved on to a study of minerals, closely observing, identifying, and comparing our samples of minerals. We also started a rock tumbler to polish some samples.

We then turned our studies to soil, starting with a review of how soil is formed and then looking at the soil horizons. We linked our observations of the different layers of soil to the concept of change.

It was a day filled with curiosity, hard work, and discovery!

Questions to ask your Geologist about today’s activities:

  • What results did you observe with the experiment with acid (vinegar) and chalk? How does this result apply to erosion of rocks?
  • What results did you observe with the experiment with friction and rocks?
  • Can you remember the names of any of the minerals you observed? What did you find interesting about any of the minerals?
  • What is happening to the samples in the rock tumbler?
  • How is soil different the deeper down you dig?
