Summer SAVY, Session 4 Day 2, Greek Mythology (Young) (5th – 6th)

Posted by on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 in blog, SAVY.

Today was an exciting day in class! We started with Connections from the New York Times. It was quite a challenging one today!  We then immersed ourselves in gods and goddesses! Students created a family tree of the gods and goddesses and added it to our classroom wall. Then, we headed outside, and they chose their favorite god or goddess to emulate, so they could become part of a huge connections web with yarn to show how they are all connected in some way.
Their favorite god or goddess was featured in a bio poem. We needed to do some research to learn more about them, so students spent time investigating and sharing that information with the class. We all learned something new! Their beautiful poems are displayed on the wall in our classroom.  Ask your child what they discovered about their god or goddess.
The best part of the day was creating a new god or goddess. Who knew the world needed a god of hamburgers? These amazing new gods and goddesses now have their own social media accounts, and they are all surprisingly popular! I know how much they would love to tell you all about the posts these celebrities made today!
Tomorrow, we will dive into the hero’s journey. What path does every hero follow? How can this be applied to Heracles and his journey?
Some discussion for home:
  • What is the definition of a myth?
  • Tell me all about your celebrity god or goddess.
  • Who is your favorite god or goddess, and what are some new things you learned about them today?

We look forward to learning more tomorrow!
