SAVY 2019: Session 6, Day 4 – Games Galore (Rising 1st/2nd)
We began our day with another Guess Again and boy are we getting super skilled at figuring probability! This time we had unifix cubes, and our guesser was familiar with the colors they can come in because they are used in the classroom. So we found that having background knowledge is an advantage to figuring probability.
Next, we spent the bulk of our morning working on our game creations! We made a check list that helps us know what our games need to include such as, Did we work neatly?, Did we choose a spinner, dice or other way to move from start to finish?, Did we write the rules and tell how someone wins?, Did we state the age range of players?, Did we make a name for our game?, Did we make the playing pieces?, and Is our game fair so someone would want to play it? Every game is so uniquely designed and created! The game makers are looking forward to inviting you to play their game with them at the Open House tomorrow. Open House is from 3:15-3:35 in our classroom. Be on the lookout for more details in the parent email this evening.
Later in the day, we spent time playing a variety of games to determine whether or not they were fair or unfair. Those that were deemed unfair were revised and we asked some deep questions such as the following. How can developing strategies and criteria for playing games impact fairness and power? How does the level of fairness impact the level of power between people? We also added more ideas to our Power concept map.
Tomorrow will be such fun when we all play our games. We can’t wait to show you what we’ve come up with!
