SAVY 2019: Session 6, Day 1 – The Great Debate (Rising 3rd/4th)
Today was our first day for The Great Debate! We began our day looking at commercials and analyzing the message and intended audience. It was so exciting to see the students understand the motivations of the advertisers and grasp the deeper meaning of the intended message. We followed up our advertisement analysis with an introduction to rhetorical devices. Students were given a statement and with a group, came up with an argument for each of the rhetorical devices. I was so impressed by the arguments generated by each group. The afternoon was dedicated to independent research for their final debate on Friday. Students were paired up and they were given an issue to research. Students will need to be very familiar with both sides of the argument, as they will not be told their position until Friday. We ended the day with a round of Minute to Win It. Each pair of students was given a statement. They had one minute to write down as many arguments for their statement position as they could. Each student then orally shared their argument and the group gave feedback. Tomorrow we will dive right into debatable issues in history. I’m so excited about the rest of our week together!!
