Summer SAVY 2018: Session 5, Day 2 – Chemical Spill, Miss Raff (Rising 3rd/4th)

Posted by on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

News broke this morning that there has been some suspicious activity near the study site. There had been complaints about suspicious vehicles, chemical smells, and funny tasting water. Your scientists decided to investigate the situation. After we reviewed all the information, we used the scientific method. Your students asked questions and developed hypotheses to try to answer them. Then the scientists realized that they still needed more information! Students used https://www.google.com/earth/ to investigate the study site. Could homes or rivers be affected if there was a spill? What about the plants? If you have a computer at home, maybe your scientists can help you explore the world using google earth!

The scientists realized they needed to move fast. In the afternoon, they made their way to the study site. Things looked drastically different compared to yesterday. Caution tape surrounded the area and the water was red! Some scientists even noticed a funny smell. Plants near the spill were dead and the critters looked ill. Students measured the pH of the water (it was much lower and more acidic than yesterday!) and interviewed a witness had seen some mysterious activity in the area! The scientists could tell that something was not right. When they compared their data to the healthy site from Day 1 of SAVY, they knew that the study site was not healthy. Let’s hope they can clean this spill up quickly!
