Fall SAVY 2019: Day 3 – Robotic Engineering (Grades 5/6)

Posted by on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 in Grade 5, Grade 6, SAVY.

We wrapped up our fall session this past Saturday in Robotic Engineering by building a carousel with the EV3 Mindstorm. The students learned about shafts, gears, and the touch sensor options in Mindstorm. After they successfully built their carousel, the students programmed it to spin and turn on and off with a touch sensor.
Then they worked on the sphero maze.  All the coding and tricks they had learned with the sphero finally came together in our final culminating project. Students had to make sure they measured their distance accurately in order to program the speed of the robot to make small and accurate turns and maneuver through the maze. Additionally, they applied loops and other basic functions to simplify their code which reduced errors as they tested their final program. All of the mazes were a great success!
And we ended the day with battle bots! Students battled their EV3 robots against those of their peers to test who had the most well constructed robot. It was a fun and eventful last day and I hope these students continue their exploration of robotics long after SAVY has ended. Thank you for sharing your Saturdays learning with us!
Sincerely,
Ashley and Chaz
