Fall SAVY 2019: Day 2 – Robotic Engineering (Grades 5/6)

Posted by on Monday, September 30, 2019 in Grade 5, Grade 6, SAVY.

Today was a busy, but productive day in Robotic Engineering! We started the day with activity called “Build What I Can’t See.” Each team had one person who could see the drawing and a runner. The runner would describe to his/her team what to draw without telling them what they were drawing. It was a great activity that showed how important communication is within a team and taught that paying attention to the details is vital to team success.

Then, we had a lesson pseudo code by giving instructions to a ‘human robot’ to perform a given task. We discussed loops, degrees, and speed. They learned that they have to be able write code in human language before they can program the language needed for the robot. We spent the rest of the morning in the computer lab programming the Sphero to make a square with a loop and using a direction sensor, as well as making the robot spin, jump, and make sound.

In the afternoon, we split into two larger groups. One group tested their code with the Sphero while the other group improved upon the design of their EV3  robot and corrected their code for the robot to follow a color line with a color sensor. Then the groups switched, so each person had an opportunity to work with both robots.

Only one more day remains! We hope you will join us for the Parent Open House on Saturday. Details will be sent in the parent email so be on the lookout for that soon.
