Fall SAVY 2018, Day 2 – Hydrology 101 (1st/2nd)
Streams, aquifers, and glaciers, oh my!
How does water move? We all know it flows, but did you know that water meanders, conveys, and infiltrates?! On Saturday, the students built models to replicate real-life processes. First, we built (and labeled) a meandering stream to observe erosion and deposition. We created flubber glaciers and tested different scenarios to see what (temperature, slope, basal conditions, etc.) makes solid ice flow. We also explored the layers of the earth and how different porosities affect infiltration and groundwater movement. The day was messy, action-packed, and a ton of fun!
We also had the honor of having two guest scientist join our class and tell us about their research. They talked about the skills scientists must practice and what makes their own research questions important. Throughout our class, we continue to ask why does this matter to scientists. But more importantly, we ask why does this matter to me. Next week we will delve into these questions even more as we explore the human influence on the hydrological cycle.
