Summer SAVY 2018: Session 5, Day 4 – Chemical Spill, Miss Raff (Rising 3rd/4th)
Today, your scientists tackled another part of the scientific method: communicating results. We read a kid-friendly version of an article investigating the effect of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on fiddler crabs. Your bright students were able to identify the question, hypothesis, independent and dependent variables, controls, and constants in the experiment. They synthesized information from this complex article and discussed the results of the study.
We learned about two ways to manage an acid spill: dilution and neutralization. Your scientists conducted an experiment to dilute vinegar with water and another experiment to neutralize vinegar with baking soda. They made observations about how quickly the pH changed. More water was needed than baking soda to reach neutral pH!
In the afternoon, your scientists created another chemical reaction. They made puffy slime using contact solution, shaving cream, glue, and baking soda. As always, your scientists were able to discuss complex chemical and scientific topics in the context of chemical spills.
