Summer SAVY 2018: Session 5, Day 2 – Character Creations (Rising 2nd)

Posted by on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 in Grade 2, SAVY.

Dear Parents,

We had an exciting and productive Day 2! The students are eager to start working on their puppets and stories featuring our three characters we created yesterday. We started off the morning with another “focus” game, called “Zip, Zap, Boing”. The students caught on quickly and the game taught them clear, intentional communication and the importance of eye contact. They enjoyed this high energy game to warm up their brains.

We started off the morning by discussing plot. First, we talked about protagonists and the students went around and described the protagonists of their favorite books and movies. We then talked about how the protagonist goes on an adventure and an inciting incident–or firecracker as we called it–spurs them into action! We then talked about what an antagonist is and the climax. The students did a great job of making connections between our new vocabulary and previous books they have read. Parents, feel free to quiz your children on these new vocabulary words and if they can make connections between your favorite family films or books! After our discussion, students went to the front of the room and shared their ideas for adventures our three characters could go on. We then dissected their stories to again connect them back to our vocabulary.

After snack, the students drew their renditions of “Pokey”, our characters’ puppy and then we created a materials list for what we might want to make our puppets out of later. Students then brainstormed and collaborated with each other to figure out which puppet they want to create. There was so much excitement and discussion between the students and they worked well together. We had practice in compromise and how to respect others’ ideas even if you do not agree with them. In the end, every one was satisfied with their job in constructing the puppet!

We asked the students to bring 3 items from your recycled materials to class tomorrow to help us start our puppets! Think different shapes and sizes. No glass please. If there is nothing in the house, we have extra materials in the class. To end the class we each practiced walking like we think our created characters would walk. We learned a lot about our creations through this.

We are so looking forward to seeing the children tomorrow!
