Summer SAVY 2018: Session 4, Day 4 – Adventures in Algebra (Rising 2nd)

Posted by on Thursday, July 12, 2018 in Grade 2, SAVY.

Today the mathematicians continued to work with variables in equations by creating their own variable puzzles; they even went a step farther by creating extremely challenging puzzles for their peers to solve. They made sure their puzzles were in equation form, and some of their equations contained two to three unknown variables. This added more rigor to the assignment.
The mathematicians were introduced to the strategy of “inverse operations”. For instance, addition and subtraction are inverse operations. Also, multiplication and division are inverse operations. In order to show their knowledge of inverse operations, they solved several algebra problems and created a variable puzzle requiring multiplication.
They spent the latter part of the morning computing equations to display the items for sale in their stores. They continued to express their excitement of generating money for the Children’s Hospital. During snack time, they visited the hospital to see the various stakeholders who will benefit from the addition of the new, nature-themed artwork.
Thank you,
Dr. P.
