Summer SAVY 2018: Session 4, Day 3 – Intro to Coding and Robotics (Rising 1st)

Posted by on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 in Grade 1, SAVY.

Students began the day with their reflection journals; they were asked to write their own algorithms (similar to the Angry Birds puzzles they have been working on so far) based on a picture they drew. Where is the object in the picture? Is it turning left or right? How far does it move forward? 100 inches? 100 feet?

Students went on to  make tremendous progress on their coding and debugging skills as they continued solving their Angry Birds puzzles on Code.org.

We read more of Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot and were introduced to a robot named “Roz”. The children in the text attempted to “order” or program Roz to do their homework.  The student discussed the assumptions and implications of delegating such a task to a machine. Should robots do our homework? Would they do it correctly to teacher expectations?  Would children learn their lessons? We later asked ourselves if computers could be delegated with debugging our code? Hmmmm…?

Please consider visitng our Parent Open House on Friday at 9:15-9:45.  The children would love to share their questions, accomplishments, and future programming plans with you in person in the Lab!

Looking forward to a productive Thursday!
