Summer SAVY 2018: Session 4, Day 1 – The Great Debate, Mr. Lee (Rising 3rd/4th)

Posted by on Monday, July 9, 2018 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

Parents,

We had a fantastic first day at SAVY!

We began our class by introducing our names and our favorite desserts, which subsequently led to a debate about which desserts are the best! We also established a few ground rules that will be essential to the success of a class that is all about cooperation and collaboration—be kind, and be brave. What an awesome way to start our class, The Great Debate!

We spent the first half of the morning playing a game involving a gibberish language called “Omnish” (your child will very likely mention and/or mispronounce the name of this made-up language) in order to learn the importance of listening and observation in debate. We had a 30-minute Organized Recreational Activity (ORA) to get in some exercise, discussed the difference between a debate and an argument, and then enjoyed a well-deserved lunch while mingling with our new friends.

The last 3-hour segment of the afternoon was spent watching a few educational videos about Socrates and the art of forming an argument, learning the structure of a formal Team Policy Debate, and finally breaking up into 2 teams and having our very own debate. Parents, you might ask you child tonight what the 5 steps to creating an argument are (Gather, Explore, Form, Defend, and Refine), as we learned in class today.

It was a delightful first day, filled with excitement and an eagerness to share ideas and learn. The students expressed insightful comments, participated very well, and asked advanced, thought-provoking questions. We are so happy to have your children here in The Great Debate this week!

Thank you,

David Ian Lee (Instructor)
Niah Charles (Teaching Assistant)
