Summer SAVY 2018: Session 2, Day 5 – Animal Communications (Rising 3rd and 4th)
For our last day of Secret Worlds: Intro to Animal Communication, our students jumped into action, designing two science communication products to showcase at the parent open house. These projects convey unique impacts of manmade noise on animal communication through flyers, posters, and videos. Groups had deadlines for making draft versions of flyers and either a poster or call-to-action video script, which they workshopped with instructors before making a final product. There were some minor disputes about who would draw some elements or whose wording to use, but the students were pretty good at finding compromise for the sake of productivity.
After lunch, groups began finishing the flyers and focusing energy on their other products. Students showed great creativity in all aspects of the assignment: from graphic design to division of labor. To say we were impressed with group performance is a huge understatement! Watching four kids huddled around a small piece of matte paper, each working on drawing or coloring a section of their flyers, we were quite moved.

Create, discuss, revise, create, discuss, revise. The afternoon zipped by in a flurry of activity, as groups honed their graphics, stories, and messages. Students tried their hands at poster-making, whiteboard animation, voiceover, storytelling, and produced some really amazing products! We are so excited for the parents to see what their kids have made and to share in their new-found passion for the overlooked issue of anthropogenic noise!
