Summer SAVY 2018: Session 2, Day 1 – Animal Adaptations (Rising 1st)

Posted by on Monday, June 18, 2018 in Grade 1, SAVY.

Happy First Day!

My little scientists are digging deep into a life science unit on animals, their characteristics, and their environments. Today students were introduced to the six investigation processes (make observations, ask questions, learn more, design and conduct the experiment, create meaning, and tell others what was found) described in the Wheel of Scientific Investigation and Reasoning. They reviewed and learned the science safety rules for conducting experiments. They tested their understanding of the safety rules and three of the investigation processes by conducting an experiment using beach sand and water.

They were also introduced to the generalizations of change (change is everywhere, change is related to time, change can be natural or manmade, and change may be random or predictable). They came to the realization that the experiment involving the beach sand and water was an example of a “manmade change”. The students took a nature walk to explore the generalization that “change is everywhere” and reflected on what they learned by journaling in their lab books. Tomorrow the students will learn about the life cycle process and begin their study of various animals and how they undergo change to survive and/or thrive in their environments.

Sincerely,

Dr. P. J
