Summer SAVY 2018: Session 1, Day 1 – Secrets of the Moli Stone (Rising 2nd)
Happy First Day!
Today the students began the day creating a concept map to show their prior knowledge on the generalizations regarding “patterns”. They also became mathematicians on a team of archeologists working in a rural part of China. They found a stone with several markings on it. They figured out that the stone was created by two different groups of people. Their job towards the end of the week is to figure out what the symbols on the stone mean and what kind of number system the people used. The students read the story “The Maneki Neko Bank” in which they were introduced to the good luck charm of the Maneki Cat. They learned that the Maneki Cat is a white cat wearing a bib and a bell used by many Chinese businesses to attract money or good fortune.
The students became bankers by helping a fellow student count the coins that he had saved in his Maneki Neko Bank. The classmate wondered how many combinations of dimes and pennies that he could create with $0.47. By generating a rule about the patterns they found while helping thier classmate, the students were able to reflect on their work. They also expanded their thinking by coming up with different combinations for $0.57, $0.67, and $0.77. The students finished the day by playing the Card Capers Game in which they had to write the greatest possible two-digit number using just two of three numbers drawn. This reinforced the need of the students to think carefully, just like true mathematicians, about their choices.
