Summer SAVY 2018: Session 1, Day 1 – Electrifying Engineering (Rising 2nd)

Posted by on Monday, June 11, 2018 in Grade 2, SAVY.

Welcome to Electrifying Engineering!  It was a great day to meet our new electrical engineers. This morning we spent time getting to know one another and determining our lab rules using the amazing electricity of the brain. Students then explored the engineering design process by creating a tower of power for our “artifact”.  It was amazing to see students ask questions, brainstorm ideas and build their design.  Many learned that an essential part of engineering is to test it out and learn how to modify the design when things do not go as planned. Ask your student how they would redesign their tower if they could do it again!

We finished class by being “hired” by Mattel to create an interactive electronic toy.  In the days to come students will be learning about circuits, lighting LEDs, switching/pushing buttons, twisting wires, and drawing schematic diagrams.  It is going to be an exciting week here in the lab.  See you tomorrow when we learn the necessary parts of a circuit and the importance of series versus parallel circuits.

Have a great night!
