Spring SAVY 2018, Day 3- It’s Elemental (1st/2nd)

Posted by on Monday, February 12, 2018 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

Week 3 in It’s Elemental had us completing experiments, creating some scientific art, and watching a demonstration that got some of us splashed with water. We started with reviewing our subatomic particles- the protons, neutrons, and electrons. We learned how each element has a different number of protons, for example the number of protons is called the atomic number. By creating our own images of atom, we learned how to identify what element each atom is based on its number of protons. We then practiced our observations and categorizing skills by creating an alien periodic table. Just like the scientist who organized the periodic table based on chemical property trends, we arranged our aliens in a table based on their characteristics. We discussed some properties of chemicals, such as their states of matter. We saw how we can change the states of matter of dry ice by changing the pressure exerted on it. We then started to look at how we can use chemical properties such as solubility and reactivity to identify an unknown. We will be finishing up this lab next week along with investigating other properties of chemicals, such as density and electronegativity.
