Spring SAVY 2018, Day 1- It’s Elemental (1st/2nd)

Posted by on Monday, January 29, 2018 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

We had such an exciting first day in It’s Elemental. To get started we learned about some amazing science such as Marie Curie, a brilliant chemist, Albert Einstein, a great physicist, and Thomas Edison, an amazing inventor. We identified characteristics of scientist that help them be successful, such as being curious, hardworking, and observant. We were able to use these skills and the scientist method steps we learnt during our Elephant Toothpaste Activity. During this activity we identified the two chemicals that were forming the bubbles during our demonstration. We first made observations, so we knew when the chemical reaction was occurring, then we made a hypothesis, and then carefully tested our hypothesis. Finally, like all good scientist we shared our results with the class. The elephant toothpaste activity can easily be repeated at home by mixing together dried yeast, dish soap, and hydrogen peroxide. You can also watch this instructional video for more detailed explanations: https://sciencebob.com/fantastic-foamy-fountain/. Finally we learnt how to speak like a chemist by learning the difference between atoms, molecules, and mixtures. An activity with Legos allowed us to practice these terms. Even through thinking in such an abstract way was difficult, groups came together and persevered like all good scientists. I am so excited for next week when we start to study what makes an atom and learn about methods scientists use to separate mixtures. See you soon!
