Fall SAVY 2017, Day 1 – Adventures in Algebra (1st/2nd)

Posted by on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

Happy First Day!

The Adventures in Algebra class is digging deep into a unit on algebraic expressions, equations, and variables. As an introductory activity, the students created concept maps about themselves to become familiar with each other. The students were encouraged to use their public speaking skills to share their maps with their peers. They also created concept maps to assess their prior knowledge of the skills/concepts being taught in this particular unit.

We started our adventure with an introduction to expressions and equations as students delved into a hands-on activity involving balancing equations. The students were working and acting like real mathematicians as they began writing equations and making sure their equations were balanced. The students were encouraged to share their strategies in class, so that their classmates could benefit from the various creativity that filled the room. They also worked their way through learning a number trick that involved even and odd numbers.

Looking forward to continuing our discovery next week!

Sincerely,

Dr. P. J
