Summer SAVY 2017, Session 6/Day 3- Mystery and History (Rising 4th/5th)
Today our detectives have been very busy! They had numerous tasks at hand!
We began this morning by presenting our theories about the fate of the Roanoke colonists and comparing our theories with those of experts. We found that we came up with some of the same theories as the experts but also that we came up with many more!
After that, we turned our attention to today’s main topic, which was ‘Lost Explorers.’ First we thought about the search for the Northwest Passage and how it motivated many expeditions in the North Atlantic. Then, we examined the way a rock-star detective historian studied the disappearance of five sailors who were left in the arctic in 1576.
This afternoon, we made maps of all of the cases we’ve covered so far and ended with the last mystery for today, which had to do with the explorer LaSalle. After learning about LaSalle’s successful expeditions to claim territory for France, we learned of his failed attempt to set up a colony at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Among the misfortunes to befall LaSalle was the sinking of his ship La Belle. In our final task for today, we learned about the ways modern technology and archaeology were used to find, excavate, and analyze the remains of LaBelle.
