Spring SAVY 2017, Day 5- Awesome Algebra

Posted by on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

Our hands-on equations program is really helping students to solve equations that have both constants and variables on both sides of the equation. After today’s lesson, students are able to solve equations like 2x + 4 = x + 7  or 5x +1 = 4x + 6 to get both an x and a check. That is amazing for this age level! We used symbols like hearts, stars, and circles as variables today to solve dependent variable equations. Students are also becoming experts at mental math through our number talks.

We completed a sorting activity with vocabulary from throughout the unit and created group concept maps to connect all of those ideas together. We added the term “function” to our growing list which included: variable, equation, growing pattern, repeating pattern, hundreds chart, number talk, and balance. Students earned their 25th puff ball today, so I sent them home with some special rewards!

I am excited to extend an invitation for you to join us in our classroom next Saturday at 11:15. We will be demonstrating some of the techniques we’ve learned in class, such as number talks and hands-on equations. I’ve also invited students to dress/bring props to class to help them transform into the career they’d like to be when they grow up. We are going to invite you as parents to interview the students at the “Algebra Career Fair,” where they will be able to tell you how the concepts they’ve learned in our class are helping to prepare them for the careers of tomorrow. We can’t wait to see you there!

Have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll look forward to meeting you next Saturday morning.
