Spring SAVY 2017, Day 3- Hydrology 101: The World of Water

Posted by on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

Who dirtied the Cumberland River? Well, today we learned that due to non-point source pollution, the answer may be you and me. Taking on roles of various stakeholders, the students explored how different land uses are associated with waterway pollution. Sediment, nutrients, toxic chemicals, pathogens, litter, and thermal pollution all made their way into our discussion.

After our introduction, the students linked reported water quality parameters to a monitored stream. (Typically an activity for high schoolers, the students blew me away with their critical thinking skills and team work!) Finally, in a class discussion, we explored ways scientists analyze and “fix” the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. I hope my student-hydrologists are having as much fun as I am!

Looking forward to next week!
