Summer SAVY 2015 (Session 4, Day 9) – Common and Practical Chemistry (Rising 6th/7th)
Today in Common and Practical Chemistry we learned about the mechanics of acid base reactions.
-We discussed the general equation for an acid base reaction (acid+base=water+salt)
-We talked about what it means to be acidic or basic (H+ vs -OH conc.)
-We learned about exponential and logarithmic functions and how to solve them
-We introduced the pH scale and talked about how acidic solutions have a low pH but basic solutions have a high pH
-We looked at what pH is mathematically to ascertain why acidic conditions (high H+ conc.) have a low pH by applying extracting the equations logarithmic properties
-We talked about the hallmarks that a chemical reaction is taking place
-We discussed physical methods for modulating reaction rates
Our main activity was making Coke and Mentos Geysers and we had a friendly competition to see which group could make the tallest geyser using the logic from our discussions. Tomorrow is our last day and I hope to see many of you at the open house!
