Summer SAVY 2015 (Week 3, Day 4) – X Marks the Spot (Rising 2nd/3rd)

I think today may have been our best day yet! We spent the morning reviewing Peter Lourie’s answers from yesterday when we talked about the lost Incan treasure. Ask your child if he found anything. Did he catch the “gold fever?”
Later, we also talked about how archaeologists approach treasure and how they differentiate themselves from treasure hunters. Who works to preserve cultural artifacts and create a historical timeline? Archaeologists! We watched a video made by a recent Vanderbilt archaeology PhD about looting at dig sites. You can talk with your child about what looting means and it’s negative consequences.
We ended the day by learning to use compasses and going on a hunt for treasure by following directional clues around campus. Everyone in the class is now a master of cardinal direction!!! The group seemed to love this activity!
We look forward to sharing with some of you tomorrow some of what we learned this week. The plan is for students to prepare a couple facts about different treasure we learned about to share with you and then walk around the room with you to show you different things we have worked on this week.
