Summer SAVY 2015 (Week 3, Day 4) – Spatial Smarts (Rising 6th/7th)
In the morning, each Grand Challenge team presented the list of variables they identified as relevant for the location of the space elevator base station. Teams reflected on how differences in priorities (environmentalists, health and society experts, infrastructural experts) affects key variables of interest. We also discussed the power of interdisciplinary thinking. Teams were encouraged to incorporate variables valued by other stakeholders because tomorrow classmates will vote on the best location for the space elevator. After discussing the Grand Challenge, students were presented with a number of complex, dynamic and inherently spatial problems (poverty, water, climate). In groups, they discussed the types of spatial data needed to understand these problems. We then reviewed approaches taken by scientists and decision makers to address these challenges. In the afternoon, students worked on the Grand Challenge. Teams made presentations full of maps defending their selection for the location of the space elevator base station. The final presentations are tomorrow!
