Summer SAVY 2015 (Week 1, Day 1) – Survive and Thrive (Rising 1st)
Happy First Day!
My Survive and Thrive class is digging deep into a life science unit on animals, their characteristics, and their environments. They took a preassessment by completing a concept map on their prior knowledge of what it means to survive versus thrive in one’s environment. They reviewed and learned the science safety rules for conducting experiments. They tested their understanding of the rules by preparing their mealworms’ habitats using the science safety guidelines.
They also delved into a math challenge activity entitled “A Tough Situation” while learning that there are different ways to solve mathematical and scientific problems. The students were encouraged to share their ideas in class so that their classmates could benefit from the creativity that filled the room. I was proud to see the students working and acting like real scientists while reflecting on what they learned through their journaling.
