Discovering the Third Dimension
What a great first Saturday of SAVY! We spent our first session getting to know one another and exploring shapes through some different activities. One of the first things that I did was ask students was what they hope they might learn in our class. Many students were very interested in thinking about how different shapes make up different objects in our lives. They wanted to draw robots, rocket ships, and vehicles. That led us to think about different shapes and their relationship to one another. This was a great place for us to start this week because we spent some time cutting up square pieces of paper to make triangles and rectangles. The students put those pieces together to make other shapes like octagons, hexagons, and pentagons, just to name a few.
We explored some different shapes to name what they had in common. For instance, we looked at different triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons. It is very important for students to see different examples of these shapes because sometimes they can be limited to thinking that only equilateral triangles are triangles because that is the most common example in math texts. As we listed the common characteristics of the shapes, students brought up the word “corners.” Students often think that a triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners. This thinking can be misleading because they might think that the quadrilateral below has 4 sides and 3 corners since one “corner” looks different. We talked about how we would be using the word angles and talked about how this shape has 4 sides and 4 angles. We also introduced the word vertex and talked about that place where two sides meet in a shape.
