Persuasion – Day 1

After braving the snowy weather to get to Vanderbilt on Saturday, SAVY students spent the morning learning about the art of persuasion. We discussed several terms related to persuasion: ethos (argument from an appeal of trust, credibility, or conscience), pathos (argument based on emotional appeal), and logos (argument based on logical reasoning). Students watched several short clips of persuasive moments in film to help them apply their new knowledge (see links below), and then worked in groups to write a persuasive speech using each of the three types of argument. Over the next week, students will be listening carefully to see how others (parents, teachers, friends, advertisers) attempt to persuade them so we can discuss further examples of ethos, pathos, and logos next week. Our class is off to a great start!
