Something Fishy (Rising 6th/7th) – Day 6

We got our fish for our aquariums over the weekend! They’re bait minnows and they look pretty happy in their little condos! Tomorrow we’ll look again at microscopic organisms in the aquariums and compare them to organisms from a running stream.

We also studied the process of waste water treatment, which depends very heavily on the use of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Finally we did a simulation of an aquatic food chain and discussed the processes of energy transfer and accumulation of pollutants in organisms.  We also looked very briefly at the way that mercury gets into aquatic ecosystems.Tomorrow we plan to design our own water filtration systems, look at lots of organisms with the microscopes, and – if we have time – investigate a little of the process of photosynthesis. It’s hard to believe that we only have 4 more classes of Something Fishy!
