Genetics (Rising 4th/5th) – Day 6

Welcome back to our second week of genetics!  This week will be filled with lab tours and experiments as we prepare for our scientific meeting on Friday.  Today, we traveled to the other side of Vanderbilt to learn about BioVU, Vanderbilt’s DNA databank. This unique resource allows Vanderbilt researchers access to one of the largest repositories of its kind to conduct genetic studies of human disease and drug response. Students saw million dollar technology at work extracting DNA from patient blood and spit.  The last part of class was spent learning about dominant and recessive genes. Interestingly, all students predicted dominant genes would be the most prevalent in the population.  We will put their hypothesis to the test tomorrow using our Creaturius Crazarius! Shhh.. don’t give them the answer.
