Spring SAVY 2013 Week 4: Abracadabra Algebra

Dear Parents,

Your mathematicians continue to amaze me. This week we followed up our investigation of Pascal’s triangle with more amazing sequences. With a pineapple as a ‘visual aid’, we learned about the astounding sequence of Fibonacci. Nautilus shell, pinecone, sunflower, our hands, spiral galaxy … Video interactions showed us where this Golden Ratio [1 : 1.618] can be seen in nature, reminding us of our Big Idea that Math is Everywhere.

After learning about this idea of Phi, we reviewed a bit of our findings last week about Pi and other irrational numbers. We enjoyed our time together creating and solving linear equations. We learned about PEMDAS as a pneumonic to remember order of operations [parenthesis, exponents, multiplication / division, addition/ subtraction.] We are excited to share some of our discoveries with you in a couple weeks. We are also planning some number trick surprises.

One of our goals with SAVY is to help your students to become metacognitive kids, thinking about their thinking. They are learning some things about themselves as it pertains to their math giftedness. It is fun to see their faces light up with connection when we talk about generalities of their metacognition. They all have strong ability with numbers and reasoning; I’ve seen great memories, as they carry information from one Saturday to the next after only 1-2 presentations; they are keen observers and they love our number puzzles and games. These children’s enthusiasm for learning, quick grasp of math concepts, and their desire to collaborate with homogenous peers are weekly affirmations to me of the value of a program like SAVY.
