Spring SAVY 2013 Week 2: Computer Modeling

This week’s SAVY session began with teams sharing their designed rules for drawing a shape using a system of sensors and logo programming.  After each group shared and received their feedback, the class discussed the four elements of design.  Class members brainstormed and shared examples about rules such as: design is goal-oriented, successful designs must be specific, but can have variations among them, design is user-oriented, and since, it improves one small improvement at a time, design is iterative.

During the second part of the session, each team reflected on the weaknesses of their initially-designed system in order to determine how it could be improved by using a system constructed with legos.  After predicting the advantages of a lego-based system, each team began to design a system devised of lego blocks and motors that will draw a shape using the sensors and logo program.  Throughout this activity, SAVY students focused on the goal of their design (making a machine that will draw a shape), and the exemplified iterative design with the transition into their second system.

We look forward to next week when the teams will complete the first iteration of their lego-based system and we will appreciation the variation throughout the designs in the class.
