Summer SAVY, Session 3 Day 5, “Finding “Faults” in Media: The Geology of Disaster Movies” (7th-8th)

Posted by on Friday, June 27, 2025 in blog, SAVY.

Hello, SAVY Parents!! We made it all the way through our session, and all the students came out on the other side, hopefully with a bit more knowledge and an engaging and fulfilling week behind them.

Today was mostly dedicated to finishing and presenting the final projects.  We took an interlude to watch the episode of the series “From the Earth to the Moon” about the Apollo 13 mission.  This show isn’t a docuseries but is written to be true to fact, and there are episodes following the whole Apollo program.  I would recommend it if any of your kids are keen to learn more about that era of space exploration!

For the final projects, the students were asked to complete five deliverables about a movie concept they created and prepare a presentation for the class.  The things they had to produce were: a description of their movie plot, a description of the setting, character descriptions, a summary of the science concepts, and at least 6 storyboard panels depicting the main points of their movie.  Some students chose to work in groups, and some chose to work individually.

The students were given creative control over how they wanted to present their projects.  Most groups shared their storyboard panels on our document camera, and one group prepared a skit of a scene in their movie as part of their presentation.  All in all, everyone came up with a creative and well-conceived movie concept that included the science concepts that they were most excited to research.

Please ask your kids about their final projects!  They worked hard on them all week and should be proud of their final products.  You can ask them:

  • How they decided what science concept they chose to center their movie on
  • What type of research they did to ensure the science was accurate
  • What their favorite movie that we watched in the course was
  • If the way they watch science and disaster movies will change as a result of the course

I hope that you and your families have a great rest of your summer!  Please see attached some of the great things that your kids produced for their project.

All the best,

Dr. Rodgers
