Summer SAVY, Session 3 Day 2, “Biology of the Body: Exploring Human Body Systems” (5th-6th)

Posted by on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 in blog, SAVY.

Dear Savy Families,

We started our day deepening our learning about the components of blood, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma, along with their functions. We made connections between the circulatory system and other systems. To wrap up our learning about the circulatory system, we used microscopes to see blood components up close.

Later in class, our students embarked on an exciting journey to understand the skeletal system—how it works, why it’s important, and how it supports our bodies every day. Here’s a quick recap of what we did, along with some discussion questions you can use at home to deepen your child’s learning and curiosity.

Components of a Skeleton & Creating a Skeleton Model

Students took notes on the main components of the skeleton—axial and appendicular parts—and then collaborated to construct full skeleton models. This activity helped them visualize bone placement and understand the skeleton’s structure. Teamwork was important in these activities. We encouraged each other and had a great discussion about the skeletal parts.

At Home Discussion:

  • What are the two main parts of the skeleton?
  • Why is it helpful to know where each bone is located?
  • How did building the skeleton model help you understand the bones better?
