Summer SAVY, Session 1 Day 4, Math & Music (3rd-4th)
Hello SAVY Families,
It’s hard to believe that tomorrow marks the final day of our incredible journey together! This week has been a whirlwind of creativity, discovery, and rhythm as we explored the fascinating connections between music and math.
Today was no exception—we kicked things off with a burst of energy by accompanying the lively “Flight” song from Home Alone using body percussion and then transitioned to real percussion instruments. The room was alive with sound and movement!
We then dove deeper into our study of patterns and rhythm, drawing inspiration from the dynamic performance style of STOMP!. Students analyzed how mathematical rhythms are embedded in everyday sounds and movements and then got hands-on by creating their own STOMP!-inspired compositions using paper bags, plastic bags, and trash bags. The creativity was off the charts!
Next, students began crafting original rhythmic lyrics to accompany the choruses of their own songs. The results were impressive—I wouldn’t be surprised if we have some future songwriters in our midst!
As always, we wrapped up the day by continuing work on our final projects, which are shaping up to be both thoughtful and imaginative.
Extend the Learning at Home:
Here are some fun and simple ways to keep the rhythm going at home:
🎵 Create Your Own STOMP Instruments
Use household items like buckets, sticks, and metal tubes to build your own percussion instruments. Experiment with different sounds and rhythms!
👣 Stomp and Say
Pick a word with multiple syllables and stomp once for each syllable. It’s a great way to build rhythm and phonemic awareness.
🎨 Sensory STOMP Painting
Squirt paint onto a poster board, cover it with bubble wrap, and tape it down. Then let your child stomp and jump on it to create a colorful, textured masterpiece!
💃 Dance Party
Turn up your favorite tunes and let the kids dance freely. Encourage them to move to the beat and explore different rhythms with their bodies.
🕺 Freeze Dance
Play music and have everyone dance until the music stops—then freeze! It’s a fun way to build listening skills and self-control while enjoying music.
Thank you for sharing your amazing children with me this week. We’ve had a blast learning, laughing, and making music together!
Warmly,
Catherine Hayes
