Summer SAVY, Session 1 Day 1, Harry Potter: The Science Behind the Magic (Owens, Sect. 1) (5th-6th)

Today in Harry Potter: The Science Behind the Magic, students dove into the magical (and scientific!) world of brain-altering potions. We began by learning how certain real-life substances—like medicines and chemicals—can affect the brain in ways that feel almost magical. Drawing inspiration from this, students created their own imaginative potions. Each one included a name, a list of magical ingredients, and a description of the potion’s effects!

After potions class, students paid a visit to Ollivander’s Wand Shop, where the magic really came alive. Each student was matched with a wand and then given time to decorate it to reflect their personality and magical style. From glitter and paint to symbols and swirls, every wand became a unique creation. We will use these wands to cast spells (using the power of science) in tomorrow’s charms lesson!

In the afternoon, we transitioned into the science of polymers, which are stretchy, bendy chains of molecules found in everything from plastics to living tissue. To explore this concept hands-on, students made their own “troll bogeys”—a Harry Potter-style version of slime! They observed how their ingredients transformed into a gooey, stretchy substance and learned how polymers give slime its unique texture and behavior.

Students were also officially sorted into their Hogwarts houses today! Throughout the week, they’ll earn points for teamwork, creativity, and scientific thinking as they compete for the coveted House Cup. To keep the magic going at home, parents can ask their students the following questions:

  • What was the name of your potion, and what did it do?
  • What are some items in our house that are made of polymers?
  • What are polymers, and how did they help you make troll bogeys?

We had a fantastic day full of science and creativity, and we can’t wait to see your young wizards again tomorrow for more magical adventures!
