Summer SAVY, Session 5 Day 5, Chemical Spill (Pilote) (3rd-4th)

Hey Savy Families,

Students walked to the Stevenson Science Center and met with Dr. Daniel to take a tour of the chemistry lab. They were excited and had many questions. I showed them a magic trick that required knowledge of acids and bases. Next, we started our research about an animal of their choice. Students had to choose animals that live in the Cumberland River Basin. The ones that they chose included the eastern Copper Head, Tree Swallow, Crawfish, Coyote, Great Blue Herron, Pipevine Swallowtail, and Timber Rattle Snake. We were notified by our chemistry lab that the sample from the spill was confirmed to be Hydrochloric Acid. We learned the effects of this chemical on humans if touched or ingested. We began to discuss the effect of the spill on the ecosystem and our animals. If our animal wasn’t directly affected by the spill, would it affect the animal’s food supply? We related our animal to the concept of systems. The presentations were incredible. The detail in the illustration and research was impressive. This week was great getting to know each other and growing our knowledge of Acids. Many students showed so much curiosity and wanted to learn more!
