Summer SAVY, Session 5 Day 1, Earth Science Rocks! (1st-2nd)

Posted by on Monday, July 15, 2024 in blog, SAVY.

It was a delight getting to know our Geologists today. After introducing ourselves, we went over the norms for the week ahead, which will enable us to work productively together.

We started with discussions on what scientists do and the many different fields of science. The “I Have Who Has” game gave us opportunities to find out about several different scientific fields.

We then observed pictures of the Wall Arch from Arches National Park before and after it collapsed. Many insightful observations and ideas were shared, and we discussed that the collapse was a change caused by weathering and erosion. This led to the students’ giving examples of change and identifying generalizations of change.

We looked at an assortment of rocks, some even with fossils, and we identified changes that those rocks had undergone. I am eager to continue our discoveries tomorrow.

Questions to ask your Geologist about today:

  • Which poster of our norms did you create with your group?
  • Which scientist did you get in the “I Have, Who Has” game?
  • What field of science do you want to know more about?
  • What is a scientist who studies rocks, soils, and the earth called?
  • What is an example of change? Is it natural or manmade?
  • What cool thing did you notice in the rocks you observed for signs of change?
