Summer SAVY, Session 4 Day 5, Space Academy (Whiting) (3rd -4th)
We’ve had an excellent week at Space Academy, literally traveling across galaxies.
Today, we had two primary focuses: recap our amazing learning in the Space Exposition Presentation and catch up on any missed activities from the week! By the end of this week, all Cosmic Cadets will have explored the eight planets, the dwarf planet Pluto, the sun, and the moon; they will have investigated multiple experiments and written several responses. They’ve even created models and blueprints of new designs for rovers, domes, helmets, shuttles, and other space exploration tools!
One of our favorite activities today was building a Mars dome. First, we read a text about a new concept for human life on Mars: an Ice Dome. We continued lawyer-like critical thinking and made a pro/con list with text evidence; then, we built a model using colored straws to determine the best shape for a livable dome!
The rest of our day was spent reviewing learning in the Space Exposition Presentation. Students created a display and presentation according to the prompt below. You can ask your cadet to recap this presentation for you tonight!
Space Exposition Presentation:
Create a poster that highlights all of your learning this week. Your poster should:
- Explain why your Cosmic Cadet Mission was successful.
- Include evidence of your favorite learning from this week (a planet, the forces of flight, space shuttles, microgravity, toys in space, plants in space).
- Explain your position on if Mars is habitable or if Pluto should be a planet. Pick one argument to present.
- Have your Cosmic Cadet Logo and Air Travel One-Pager attached.
- Be neat, organized, and colorful! You will actually present this!
Houston, it’s been an honor! Over and out!
