Summer SAVY, Session 3 Day 4, The Road to the White House (5th – 6th)
Dear SAVY Parents,
We began by reviewing the learning from yesterday and earlier in the week. Then, we finished writing our campaign speeches and questions for our simulation. The students had mock conventions today. I have to say that each group was unique and chose different elements on the issue of “Education” to highlight, discuss, and work toward improving.
We also learned about the primary process and the national conventions and delegates. We discussed how each state has its own way of choosing delegates and holding primaries. The students learned about political cartoons and how they have been used since the 1700s to influence elections and political decisions such as joining the American Revolution.
Tonight, please discuss today’s Exit Ticket if possible: Is the American Electoral College System the best system for electing the most effective leader as president? Explain and justify your reasoning.
I am excited to hear our students’ debate tomorrow as well as see the outcome of our mock elections. The students have worked diligently to learn and understand the material. It is genuinely very rewarding to see them work as teams. Have a good evening.
