Spring 2012 Course Descriptions
Weekend Academy at Vanderbilt University (WAVU) is a residential academic program for gifted 7th to 10th grade students. Students engage in an accelerated two-day course of study designed and taught by Vanderbilt University personnel. WAVU offers fast-paced, rigorous courses on topics not usually included in school. WAVU also provides an opportunity for students to come together to study with a group of talented peers and exceptional teachers on Vanderbilt’s campus. Some past WAVU course titles include: Product Design and Innovation, Astronomy & Physics, Oceans & the Global Environment, and Sport & Spectacle in the Ancient World.
WAVU check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Check-out is 4 p.m. on Sunday. Students attend about 6 hours of class each day. Outside of class they are supervised by PTY residential staff who plan and facilitate recreation and a campus tour. A detailed weekend schedule will be provided upon admission.
Students spend Saturday night at the historic Scarritt-Bennett Center adjacent to the Vanderbilt campus. WAVU residential proctors, who are current Vanderbilt students, will supervise WAVU participants outside of class and will stay with them in the residence halls.
